字面上"Trip"的解釋是「旅行」、「吸食毒品後的幻覺狀態」，其很明顯地顯示出了Trip-Hop
的感官世界，而"Hop"一字則代表著其源自於Hip-Hop的過程，在Trip-Hop的世界裡，你可以是
神遊於黑暗的地獄（Terrific type of Trip-Hop），你可以是神遊於光明的天堂（Non-terrific type of Trip-Hop），你會發現自己總彷彿陷入在迷失與希望的猶疑陷井之中。
Trip-Hop起源於９０年代英國Bristol一地，在歐洲不斷面臨美國Hip-Hop侵入的衝擊之時，英
國的DJ們即開始將Hip-Hop發展成自己的風格，他們將Hip-Hop的速度降慢（較為down tempo），強調沈重緩慢的鼓聲及Bass，抽掉Hip-Hop中的Rap，以及Sample些老舊唱片，於是形成了所謂的Bristol Hip-Hop（Trip-Hop之前身，當時尚未有Trip-Hop這個名詞）﹔而９１年推出首張唱片「Blue Lines」的Massive Attack則帶動了這一波Bristol Hip-Hop運動（人們稱之"First Coming Of Bristol Sound"，Bristol Hip-Hop時期的風格並不是那麼地刻意要營造黑暗詭譎的氣氛），至於真正Trip-Hop興盛的關鍵時期則是在９４、９５年Massive Attack推出第二張唱片「Protection」，以及Portishead和Tricky的掘起﹔從Portishead女主唱Beith Gibbson頹廢、慵懶的唱腔加上６０、７０年代老舊唱片的sample（甚至唱片的雜音），到Tricky喃喃自語般憤世嫉俗的低沉聲音，將Bristol sound營造出了一種迷幻抽象、黑暗詭譎的新環境﹔於是便有雜誌將他們這種音樂型態稱之為"Trip-Hop"（人們稱這段時期為"Second Coming Of Bristol Sound"）P.S.事實上Massive Attack，Portishead，Tricky彼此間有著微妙的關係。
